Akashi Alam (she/her)

OPENx winner, medical student

Fried chicken shops have become a central component of inner London’s youth culture. Akashi wishes to discuss a hidden narrative behind the fluorescently lit food outlets. She believes youngsters are not simply attracted by the taste, but by their presence as an affordable social hub for people of all backgrounds. Akashi believes they are delivering where essential public services have failed – but her medical studies have brought to light the reality of the health epidemic her generation will face as a consequence. Born and raised in Tower Hamlets, she is now training to be a doctor.
