Home Is Nearby is a moving, poignant debut that explores how art can transcend politics, and the true meaning of home.
Magdalena is an experienced writer, and has also won the Mslexia Women’s Short Story Award 2017, as judged by Deborah Levy. Her short stories have been published in numerous magazines, and she has written widely on human rights topics.
Part of her impetus in writing the novel was to explore a lost Poland, a country she could have grown up in, but didn’t. In particular she was interested in exploring what life could have been like for a young woman living under communism and making art.
She has been called one of Australia’s “freshest, sharpest, and most underrated voices in contemporary fiction”(Laurie Steed, Margaret River Press).
